Your Guide to Student Housing Near Texas A&M University
Congratulations on your acceptance to Texas A&M! As you get ready to start your journey in College Station, one of your biggest decisions will be where to live. Whether you’re a freshman or a returning student, there are plenty of housing options around campus to fit your lifestyle, budget, and needs.
Living On Campus
For many new students, living in one of Texas A&M’s residence halls is a convenient and community-focused choice. While freshmen are not required to live on campus, many choose to for easy access to classes, dining, and campus events. Residence halls offer a range of layouts, from traditional shared rooms with common bathrooms to more modern suite-style setups. They come furnished, but typically furnishings are limited to a desk and chair, dresser, twin bed or extra-long twin bed, microwave, mini fridge/freezer and closet space with minimal shelving. Please note there are no kitchens in dorm living.
It’s worth noting that residence hall contracts typically align with the academic year, and the buildings close during certain breaks. If you plan to stay in College Station over the summer or during holidays, an off-campus option may work better.

Living Off Campus
If you’re looking for more independence or want a little more space, there are lots of off-campus housing options near Texas A&M. The surrounding neighborhoods each offer something unique:
- Northgate: Right next to campus and home to plenty of restaurants and nightlife, Northgate is ideal if you want to be in the middle of the action. Many student-focused apartment communities here offer modern features, roommate matching, and walkability to campus.
- South College Station: If you’d rather live somewhere more laid-back and residential, South College Station might be for you. With newer apartment complexes and quiet neighborhoods, this area is a favorite among upperclassmen and graduate students.
- Eastgate and Beyond: Students looking for lower rent prices often choose neighborhoods to the east or farther out. You’ll find older apartments and houses here, with more affordable rates — though you’ll likely need to drive, bike, or take the bus to campus.
